Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th. Is it unlucky? Or is it just your imagination?
This day has most of the world convinced that the superstitions of Friday the 13th being unlucky are true. In William Cannon’s article, “Why Is Friday The 13th Unlucky? Find Out What Happened To Curse This Day As Bad Luck,” he names five ideal reason for the unlucky 13.
The first is having to do with Jesus’ last supper and crucifixion, and the second about the day hundreds of the Knights Templar were arrested by King Philip IV. The third deals with pagan religions and women while the fourth says Friday and the number 13 are associated with capital punishment. Lastly, the fifth idea is about another party where 12 guests becomes 13 and someone is killed.
Friday the 13th has also been used as a marketing strategy for movies. Hence, Friday the 13th (movie). The movie portrays the unlucky events that become of those when Jason Voorhees is around.
For those that fear Friday the 13th, also known as friggatriskaidekaphobia, this is the last 13th of the year. Now you can walk around without fear for the rest of the year!
Kathy Padden from Today I Found Out gives a reasonable explanation as to why a Friday and the number 13 are said to be unlucky.
“Friday is considered the day that Eve gave Adam the ‘apple’ and they were kicked out of the Garden of Eden.”
Kathy then names numerous other theories created as to why this day is so bad, such as with the Temple of Solomon, King Harold II, and William Fowler. However it be, not everyone experiences the day’s unluckiness.
I, for one, find Friday the 13th to be quite lucky. My father and I have always had luck on the day, and as a younger child, I once pondered why everyone feared the number 13 and the Friday that sometimes went with it. I also wondered why no hotels have a 13th floor and why it is said that those with the letter B (13 together forms a B) in there name meant they were an unlucky person.
Superstitions are, in my opinion, what one makes them to be. Where do you stand? Is Friday the 13th unlucky or lucky to you?
