SSB Back With More Stories To Tell

SSB More Stories To Tell #SSB

Before we get to the new record from Austin, Texas’s SSB, let me tell you a little about them.

SSB (formally known as Super Smash Bros) is a National hip-hop/rap duo from Austin, Texas consisting of ARay and Hack Naja with DJ Killa Mike & DJ Nox behind them on the 1’s and 2’s.  If the name rings a bell, it probably should.  You’ve seen em rock a stage at the Gathering Of The Juggalos on three occasions.  Their most recent appearance in 2016 was brought to you worldwide via Livestream on the TJF facebook.

If not at GOTJ, you’ve seen em hit the stage with DMX, Yelawolf, Slaughterhouse, Lil Wyte, Onyx, Kutt Calhoun, Lil Flip, Tech N9ne, Rahzel, Brotha Lynch Hung, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, K-Rino, RA The Rugged Man, Caskey, Devin The Dude, Three 6 Mafia, Potluck, The Kottonmouth Kings, Rittz.

Now – let’s get to the music.  More Stories To Tell mark’s SSB’s second album appropriately represents Austin, and they’ll be first to tell ya what they think of their hometown.

One of the early favorites on the album is Austin, Texas.  “Keep Austin Wierd/ it’s the motto of my city baby/ and it’s for real/ I hear we all end up a little crazy” starts this track and continues you just how Austin seeps into your blood.

Let me rewind a bit and tell you about the opening track.  A good opening track sets the vibe for the rest of the record.  Hyped Up sets the stage in what becomes a stellar album by the boys from Austin.  This song would also be a great opener for a set as well.  The beauty in this song is it’s a great song for drinkin’ or smokin’ with the homies or just driving around town.  It’s a very easy song to get into.

Another highlight from More Stories To Tell comes from the first single, Strip Club Pornstars.  As you see below, the track features (Hed) PE, and also includes production from Bonez Dubb.  I can tell you first hand that this song vibes well live.  Most opening singles tend to be the best song on the album.  Not this track.  I don’t say that to disrespect SSB, (Hed) PE or Bonez.  This is a good track, and me saying this is a compliment to More Stories To Tell.

Since we’re now talking about tracks with features.  This album has quite a few of them.  That usually throws up a red flag to me.  I’m not a big fan of albums with many features.  While seven of the 10 tracks have features, SSB holds up more than well on their tracks without features.  SSB has talent, and it shines in Hyped Up, Austin, Texas and Comin’ Around.

The rest of the album has features, but the features don’t make the songs.  They compliment them very well.  That’s the way features should be.  If you’re buying albums for the features, that typically says something about the artist.  If you buy this album for the features, you’re in for a surprise.   SSB are good at what they do.

One of the things I look at with albums is what can I do while listening.  I’ve found myself driving, studying and just chilling to this album.  It’s an album you can take to a party, it’s an album you can just sit back and relax.  Enough of that let’s talk about the album some more.

Pass The Mic ft. Hard Jawz is one of the highlights of the album.  Lyrically it’s got a vibe that reminds me of DJ Clay’s Kept Grindin’.  I find this track motivating.  It’s got some good lessons in life hidden in it.  Is that the intent of this album?  No idea.  The fun thing about music is one song can be seen 100 different ways by 100 different people.  That’s how I saw it.

Finally, the album closes out with Wake Up feat. GrewSum.  It starts with a skit we can all relate to.  Up too late, got shit to do the next morning.  Personally, I would have had this song go back to back with Pass The Mic, but that’s just me.  Those who do, do.  Those who don’t write, and I’m sitting here writing.  This is possibly my favorite track.  The message from this song?  Wake Up and do what you gotta do.  Nobody is gonna get it done for you, quit bitching, get your shit together, and do your thing.

Overall, this album will make an excellent addition to your collection.
