The Color Before The Sun – Coheed and Cambria (TOUR DATES!)

The Color Before The Sun is phenomenal, through and through.

Setting the stage immediately with an ambience worthy of the albums title – “The Color Before The Sun” – “Island” does and excellent job of taking listeners on that journey. “Island” is catchy and quick to make you feel the hope for freedom the lyrics seem to be begging for. It sounds like the darkest, just before the dawn.  The voice of ones inner conscious urging them to ‘get off the island’ is accompanied by the sound of inspiration and determination portrayed in the instrumental elements.

Immediately snapping into a nice choppy drum line, “Eraser” departs from the angelic, otherworldly sound of “Island”. “Eraser” descends back to planet earth momentarily, giving Claudio Sanchez the chance to show off his metal voice in this epic ode to the person we don’t want to be. Slipping into the melodic “Colors“, things slow down enough to allow each element of the song to shine independently and alongside each other simultaneously. “From Here To Mars” is a meaningful ballad of repentance. A-typical of sad love songs – the band does an excellent job of communicating the hope behind the pleading of the sorry heart. The haunting, not of this world undertones which shine gloriously throughout “The Color Before The Sun”, peak in the sentimental “Ghost” and “Atlas“. “You Got Spirit, Kid” follows behind, bringing with it an obvious discontent for  the stepford way. “The Audience” is crunchy and heavy and sounds like something we do power poses in front of the mirror to (no, if you power pose – stop, please stop). “Peace to the Mountain” ends the album in true Coheed and Cambria fashion, combining the intense lyrics with a beautiful arrangement fitting of the emotion provoked.

Ten tracks and just under an hour, the journey you take through “The Color Before The Sun” is a mix of excellent technical work, passionate vocal work and lyrical work that rivals that of renowned poets. An album disconnected from the Amory Wars,  Coheed and Cambria shine through what some have called a gimmick and proven that their artistry is prevalent to a world outside of ‘The Wars‘, combining the confessions of a truly poetic nature and arranging the music in a way that feels truly astronomical – this album does not disappoint. It does exactly what it’s name says it should do – it carries you to that place where all the internal madness happens- right there in The Color Before The Sun.
